PRP Therapy for Hair Loss FAQ’s
What is “PRP” Platelet Rich Plasma?
Produced in just minutes from a small quantity of your own blood, PRP contains a concentrated mixture of the body’s own natural growth factors and circulating adult stem cells which have been shown to play a key role in tissue regeneration and stimulating hair regrowth. Once activated, platelets release their stores of powerful growth factors and other healing molecules responsible for tissue repair as well as stem cell recruitment and activation.
PRP has been successfully used for over a decade in many areas of medicine such as orthopedics, oral maxillofacial surgery, cosmetic surgery, sports medicine, and as a safe, effective, non-chemical, non-pharmaceutical alternative to surgery.
How Does PRP Therapy Work?
Platelet rich plasma contains between three and five times the normal quantity of platelets in the blood. During a PRP therapy treatment, platelet rich plasma is prepared through drawing blood from the patient. The blood sample is then run through a centrifuge for about six minutes and then experiences a second centrifugation for about fifteen minutes. This separates the platelets from the blood.
The bioactive proteins in the plasma, including VEGF, or vascular endothelial growth factor; DGF, or platelet derived growth factor; as well as TGF, or transforming growth factor (TGF), stimulates the healing of any wounds and is involved with hair growth cycles as well.
Hair follicles are very intricate structures that are regulated by growth cycles. The platelet rich plasma is packed with stem cells that stimulate hair follicle growth cycles. The action of the growth factors promotes localized cell growth as well as angiogenesis.
Typically, significant hair growth begins to show between the first and fourth treatments.
How is “PRP” Hair Regrowth performed and what is the downtime?
PRP is a non-invasive, non-drug, in-office hair regrowth treatment that takes less than one hour. Once a small sample of blood is obtained, the physician supervised preparation procedure concentrates platelets by separating them from other blood components under sterile conditions using specialized equipment. Under local anesthesia, the PRP is applied in the desired area followed by micro-punctures using a micro-needling device to promote penetration, and then a low level laser therapy treatment for optimal platelet activation. Afterwards, aside from some temporary skin redness, there are no signs the procedure has been performed. Patients may shampoo their hair immediately afterwards and there are no restrictions.
What are “Growth Factors?”
Platelets contain your own natural powerful protein molecules called growth factors that normally begin tissue repair and regeneration at a wound site. These platelet-derived growth factors stimulate connective tissue healing, skin regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, stimulate the wound healing process, as well as modulate hair growth. Some of the important growth factors and other components found in PRP include:
- Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)
- Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)
- Transforming Growth Factors
- Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1)
- Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2)
- Interleukin-1 Beta
- Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs)
What are the risks of a PRP therapy Hair Growth treatment?
Because PRP is sterilely made from your own blood, it is insulated against the risk of disease transmission. The need for pain medication after PRP treatments is rare because the procedure is preformed using local anesthesia.
Does PRP regrow “new” hair follicles?
Unfortunately, no it does not. However, PRP helps reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will produce longer, thicker, healthier hair fibers. The only way to increase the number of actual hair follicles in a severely depleted area is through hair transplantation.
When can I expect to see results from a PRP hair growth treatment and are repeat treatments required?
Everyone responds differently. However, Hair check measurements usually begin to increase within eight weeks and it may take six to twelve months to appreciate visual improvements from a PRP treatment. When PRP treatments include adjunctive treatments, the results may last up to two years before a repeat treatment is necessary.
