Scars may be a cause of a person’s emotional and or physical pain and affect their quality of life. Surgical scar removal procedures are painful and invasive and have a risk for complications. Serrão Rejuvenation Center offers scar removal treatments that are a noninvasive solution using fractional laser technology and ablative radiofrequency energy to deliver reliable scar removal with less risk, less pain and minimal downtime.
Our fractional laser and ablative radiofrequency technologies are the driving power behind our scar removal procedures. We use these energies alone or in combination to coagulate scar tissue and trigger healthy new tissue to form in our patients’ skin. Healing time is minimal, infection risk is eliminated and little to no pain is felt. Also, the ablative radiofrequency technology is appropriate for use on all skin types, making ours the preferred method of scar removal for excellent clinical outcomes.
How Scar Removal Works
Scar removal for acne, trauma and surgical scars uses fractional laser light and radiofrequency energy to create micro-columns of coagulated tissue that extend deep into the dermis with or without ablating the epidermis.
This triggers a wound-healing process that replaces the disorganized, compacted scar tissue with healthy new tissue, greatly diminishing the appearance of the scar tissue. Advanced Contact Cooling protects the epidermis, promoting safer, more comfortable treatments.
Benefits for Our Patients:
- Little to no recovery time
- Scar removal with minimal discomfort
- Excellent aesthetic outcomes
Type of Scars
Acne scars are a direct result of cystic acne or prolonged chronic acne. Reducing the appearance of acne scars has always been difficult. Prior to laser scar treatments, the available choices were mechanical dermabrasion (a wire brush which removes the top layers of skin) or deep chemical peels.
Fractional Ablative Laser (Alma Pixel) and the Fractional Non-Ablative Laser(Palomar Lux1540) have proven to be successful treatments for acne scar reduction. These lasers work by smoothing the scar ridges and encouraging collagen growth beneath the scar using the latest technology in skin resurfacing by treating the skin with microbeams of laser light.
Because these microbeams only target a pin-dot size of skin tissue at a time, the untouched skin surrounding the treated skin protects the integrity of the epidermis and healing occurs quite quickly.
Types of Acne Scars and Treatments to Reduce Scarring
Red flat “scars” resulting from capillary expansion following any inflamed acne – Treated with IPL
Shallow depressed scars resulting from tissue destruction following inflammation and infection – Treated with Alma Pixel or Palomar Lux 1540 Laser. (Micro-Needling, Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion are also options, but will have a lesser degree of improvement)
Deep rolling or “boxcar” scars resulting from cystic acne – Treated with Alma Pixel or Palomar Lux 1540 Laser.
Icepick scars resulting from deeply embedded cystic acne – Treated with Alma Pixel or Palomar Lux 1540 Laser.
Keloid scars – raised firm “hypertrophic scars” – are an occasional response to acne. Keloid Scars are treated with cortisone injections to the scars and laser therapy.
TRAUMA AND SURGICAL SCARS
Scars from accidents or surgical procedures can be painful visual reminders of what you went through as well as being disfiguring. A series of treatments help soften and minimize the appearance of these scars.
Acne, Trauma and Surgical Scar Treatment
Scars are treated with a series of procedures and different treatment modalities may be combined for optimal results. Four to six treatments may be required to show positive effects. Because the collagen response is seen over time, final treatment results are usually seen between 6 and 12 months after the last procedure. Patents may choose more aggressive treatments for faster results, but should expect several days of downtime with higher-level treatments.
Dr. Serrão will discuss the best treatment options available for you and together, you will decide what treatment plan would be best for you to achieve your desired outcome.
Scar Removal FAQs
What are Scars?
Your skin is a protective covering that is built from collagen fibers that are configured in a very structured manner. When you injure your skin, though, new collagen fibers cover the injury in a very chaotic pattern, and the result is a new scar.
Are There Different Types of Scars?
Depending on your skin type and the extent of the injury or surgery, you may develop one of four types of scars. Keloids are most common in people with darker skin types. These scars appear as raised scars that cover an area that is greater than the original injury. When you burn your skin, the resulting scar is known as a “contracture scar.” Contracture scars are formed when your skin tightens to protect the injured area. In severe burn cases, contracture scars can limit mobility and affect the underlying muscles and nerves. Hypertrophic scars are red in color and are slightly raised above the surface of your skin, and acne scars range from deep pits to scars with irregular shapes.
What is the treatment for Scar Removal?
Scars never completely go away, but laser and radiofrequency technology can be used to reduce the size and shape of the scars to help you feel more confident about your appearance. Dr. John Serrao offers treatments with fractional laser non-ablative resurfacing and Skinfinity RF ablative radiofrequency to treat your scars. The benefit of treating your scar with laser and radiofrequency technologies is that you experience little to no discomfort, and you can return to your normal activities shortly after treatment.
Is the Scar Removal procedure uncomfortable?
Laser treatments for scar removal do produce a small level of heat as the laser works to correct your scar. Most patients remain comfortable during the procedure with only a topical numbing agent and cooling. We do offer additional forms of anesthesia should you require it to remain comfortable. After your procedure, you may experience a mild discomfort that lasts only a few days.
What areas of the body can you treat?
Scar removal laser and radiofrequency treatments are safe and effective for most of the locations where you may have a scar, including your legs, hands, face, torso, abdomen and thighs. The best way to find out if scar removal laser treatments are right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Serrao. He examines your scar and discusses your treatment options to help you make an informed decision.
What is the cost of Scar Removal?
The cost of any procedure varies from patient to patient dependent on the level of correction that is needed. All of our fees will be discussed with you during your consultation and package pricing is offered. You will find our fees to be very fair and competitive for the Orlando area. Several financing options are also available at Serrão Rejuvenation Center. We welcome you to call our office for more details on fees and be sure to check our current specials.
Is there any downtime involved?
In some cases, Dr. Serrao may recommend that you rest for a few days and avoid sun exposure, but most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. You should always use a high SPF sunscreen after your scar removal treatment and you will be given a complete list of post-care instructions.
How many treatments are required?
Each scar removal treatment is unique to the patient and it will take a series of treatments at 4 to 6 week intervals to achieve the desired result. During your consultation, Dr. Serrao discusses your treatment plan, including the number of sessions he recommends for your best possible outcome.
What other options are available to me for scar removal?
There are other options to treat scars including micro-needling, dermabrasion, chemical peels and dermal fillers. However, the different levels of treatment will also have different levels of correction. All of the options that are available to you will be discussed during your consultation wit Dr. Serrao
