Also known as Dermal Fillers and Soft Tissue Fillers
Time tends to create unwanted changes, depressions and folds to our faces called wrinkles. One type of wrinkle is formed when we smile a lot, laugh a lot and make facial expressions. These are good emotions that should be expressed. Unfortunately, they can result in deep wrinkles and creases that we don’t want. Facial Fillers can reduce some of these problems.
Facial Fillers are a type of minimally invasive aesthetic medicine used to add volume, enhance the contours of the face, and fill in wrinkles to smooth out the skin. Fillers add volume, support and padding to the face for a younger more refreshed appearance. Common areas to inject fillers are in the face, neck, and hands. Fillers are among the most popular aesthetic procedures performed because they carry immediate results, very few risks and little recovery time.

Facial Filler FAQs
How Do Facial Fillers work?
Facial Fillers are injected into your skin to push the wrinkle outward, making the skin fuller and the wrinkle less noticeable. The skin is supported and padded. In a sense, we give volume to your skin. Volumizing the face is an effective way to rejuvenate many aspects of aging. There are multiple fillers that will work, however the smartest use of these products is to apply the best filler for a given patient’s issues and desires.
Radiesse is a very popular product for the cheeks, chin and hands. This product has immediate results that are long lasting by results stimulating one’s own collagen to grow. Radiesse is often blended with numbing medicine for the hands and is very tolerable for the patient. Radiesse Plus is made with added lidocaine that allows for patient comfort and provides a wonderful lift of the skin.
Belotero Balance is a prescription injection that is used to temporarily smooth out and fill in those stubborn mild to moderate etched in lines or wrinkles on the face, neck and around the mouth. It is a great choice for the tear trough area (hollow under the eye) because it will not cause the tyndall effect (bluish-grey color). Once volume and lifting has been restored with other products such as Radiesse, Restylane Lyft, or Voluma; Belotero Balance creates an elegant finishing touch to smooth the surface of the skin with a natural look and feel.
Made from hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin that decreases as we age Restylane is used to fill folds, depressions, scars and lips. Using small injections into the affected areas of skin, the patient is thoroughly numbed prior to the injection process. The treatments last up to six months and sometimes longer in some individuals. Common areas for injection of this filler include areas around the eyes, mouth and cheeks.
RESTYLANE LYFT® (PERLANE)
Restylane Lyft is similar to Restylane, but is formulated for deeper use in areas such as the cheeks and chin. It will add structural support to lift the skin.
Restylane Refyne is the newest generation of dermal fillers. It is a cross-linked formula that allows for more flexibility and skin support that is needed in the mouth area. This dual action softens the lines, but still allows you to smile, smirk and make the natural expressions that you have always made. You get a smoother appearance without the restriction that can occur with some other types of dermal fillers. Results can last for up to 12 months and there is no downtime for this procedure.
Restylane Defyne is another next generation filler approved for the deeper wrinkles and folds of the face. This specialized formula is designed to treat deep laugh lines and wrinkles in the mouth/nose region, offering a smoother, youthful appearance while still giving support and flexibility to the skin. This allows for natural movement when laughing and smiling while still diminishing the lines originally created by these expressive movements over the years. Results can last for up to 12 months and there is no downtime for this procedure.
The lips and the lines around the mouth, like other areas of the face, show signs of aging as you get older. This often results in lip thinning, lost shape and an increase in vertical lines above the lip. Restylane Silk is designed specifically to provide natural-looking results in these particular areas by using smaller, smoother particles than those used in other Restylane® products.
JUVÉDERM™ ULTRA XC & ULTRA PLUS XC
Juvéderm is made from the same hyaluronic acid as restylane but has a uniqulally smooth formulation. Juvéderm is also used to fill folds, depressions, scars and lips. These treatments last up to six to nine months and sometimes longer in some individuals.
JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC
Volbella is the most recent addition to the collection. It is tailored to add subtle volume to the lips and smooth the appearance of vertical lip lines.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC
Voluma™ XC injectable gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area. It gives you a subtle lift, helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile and can last for up to 2 years. It’s different than JUVÉDERM® XC and works on a different area of the face. JUVÉDERM® XC smoothes out moderate to severe wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth, like parentheses. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC, however, adds volume to the cheek area.
SCULPTRA® Utilizing a product that stimulates collagen growth, Sculptra is an overall facial volumizer used primarily for individuals who have lost significant fat in their face. Several treatment sessions are required that are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, but the results can last several years.
PLATELET RICH FIBRIN MATRIX (PRFM)
Also known as the Vampire Facelift, PRFM is like a gel, similar to the other fillers, and can be injected to sculpt the face and tear trough – and it comes from your body. But, here’s the best part; not only does PRFM cause an increase in the volume, but also PRFM acts like a rejuvenating agent with growth factors normally used by your body in healing. This safe and effective procedure is FDA cleared.
BELLAFILL® (ARTEFILL) *
Bellafill Is the only permanent facial filler available in the United States not absorbed by the body, it achves long lasting results in all areas of the face other than the lips
*Dr. Serrão does not recommend the use of any silicone based permanent fillers and will discuss this with you further at your consultation.
NATURAL FAT TRANSFER
The fat in your body can be harvested with a special liposuction technique and re-injected into your face to fill wrinkles, creases and depressions caused by loss of volume. It provides gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. The advantage of using your own fat is that it’s your natural filler, the disadvantage is that the results are unpredictable. Dr. Serrão does perform fat transfer procedures to many body areas, but he prefers to use the FDA approved fillers that are available today. The results are natural, predictable and long lasting.
What do Facial Fillers treat?
Facial Fillers are for people who are troubled with deep facial lines, creases or wrinkles – the ones you can see even when your face is fully relaxed. They can also be used on any indentation in your skin, such as scars. The most common areas treated are your smile lines. These are the deep lines that extend from the corners of your mouth both up above the corner to the nose and down below the corner into the jaw area.
What are Facial Filler treatments like?
Facial Filler treatments are performed in our office as an office visit. Usually a local anesthetic is administered similar to a dental block. Occasionally, topical creams are also used to numb the treatment area. The Facial Filler is then injected, using a very thin needle, and results can be seen immediately. You can get back to your normal activities the following day.
Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
Serious complications from Facial Fillers are rare. Many people bruise after the injection which can be quite unsightly and can last for one to two weeks. Ice packs and pressure on the areas right after the treatment can minimize this bruising.
What should I expect from Facial Filler treatment?
Expect slight redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness or an itching sensation, but minimal pain in the treated area. These resolve quickly. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears within a few days. How long the filler lasts is variable. This depends upon the filler used and the severity of the wrinkle. For severe wrinkles, surgery is necessary to get the best and longest-lasting improvement.
